Whether you are a Christian, Muslim, agnostic, or atheist, there is a wealth of ancient wisdom about business found in the Bible.
As a business coach, I often get asked by business owners and CEOs for recommendations of good books on business. Some are surprised that the Bible is always near the top of my list! The Bible mentions money over 800 times and makes over 2,000 financial and economic references.
If there is one person who knows a lot about business and wealth, it is the One who created it all!
Here are 5 Bible verses every CEO needs to know.
1. The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. – Genesis 2:15
This is a fundamental truth of humanity- God designed us and He designed us to work! Your vocation, your business, and work is a good thing. Work (in healthy amounts) gives us a sense of fulfillment and purpose. It is an opportunity for us to give back to others the talents God has given us.
2. Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest… – Exodus 23:12
Though work is a good thing, we were also designed to rest. Many very successful CEOs have lost their families and their health due to over working. It is important that we take ample time to recharge and refresh.
3. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice. – Psalm 112:5
Some cultures call this karma. You reap what you sow. If a gardener plants azaleas, what will spout out of the ground? Azaleas! It’s absurd to believe that a banana tree will spring up!
Just like the azaleas, if you sow bad seeds by taking advantage of your customers and cheating your employees, you will reap fruit of distrust that will devastate your business long term.
However, if you sow seeds of generosity, goodness, and fairness, good and success will come to you.
4. Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. – Proverbs 15:22
Outside counsel is absolutely vital to a CEO. This is why I am dedicated to business coaching and giving wise counsel to my clients. I would have saved millions and millions of dollars if I would have had a coach early in my career.
Today, even though I’ve been ranked the top 3 of business coach in the US, I have my own coach! My coach has given me advice that has led me to tremendous success – it is worth its weight in gold.
5. The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. – Proverbs 10:22
In the past, I have been confused about this verse, because there are many wealthy people who are not godly. Then one day, the end of the verse jumped out to me- “and he adds no sorrow with it.”
There are wealthy people who are unhappy because they worry they might lose it all and those that experience joy consistently because they realize God is the giver and owner, they are merely the stewards.
All my success is nothing compared to the fulfillment I’ve found in knowing Jesus Christ. Do you know Jesus? The most import questions someone can ask: “Is there a God?”, “Who is He?” and “Why am I here?” Understanding those profound truths leads to more peace and fulfillment than all of the riches and business success in the world.
There is a vast amount of wisdom on business contained within the Bible. These are just a small collection of verses that guide me in business.
